Quieter rooms

The interlayer in laminated glass is usually PVB (polyvinyl butyral), a clear, slightly flexible plastic. As well as holding the glass together, it dampens sound as it passes through the pane. That is why laminated glass is used in places where noise matters, such as airports, recording studios and schools.

At home, the difference shows up in the bedroom that faces a busy road, the study under a flight path or the lounge beside a highway. You will not get total silence, but the constant hum of traffic becomes a lot easier to live with.

Cooler rooms

Laminated shatterproof glass is available tinted. Tinted laminated glass cuts glare and reduces the heat that comes through the glass, which counts for a lot under the Highveld sun. North- and west-facing rooms, where the afternoon sun turns a lounge into an oven, benefit most. You still get the view, with less squinting.

Safer for the family

Not every broken pane is a crime. A soccer ball through the lounge window, a pressure washer that gets too close to a door, or a small child who runs into a glass door they did not see: these are everyday ways that glass breaks. With laminated glass, the interlayer holds the broken pieces together, so there is far less chance of large, sharp shards falling out of the frame and onto someone.

Harder to break in

Housebreaking is still the most common crime South African households face. Stats SA estimates around 1.5 million break-ins in 2025/26, affecting roughly 1 in 19 homes, and more than half of them are never reported to the police. Most break-ins start with a window or a glass door. Shatterproof glass holds together when it is struck, which turns a quick smash-and-enter into slow, noisy work that most intruders give up on.

Laminated glass comes in three performance variations:

• Normal Strength (NS): the everyday choice for windows and doors.
• High Penetration Resistant (HPR): built to resist being broken through.
• High Impact (HI): built to take heavier impacts.
