Windows that will not stay open

Most aluminium casement windows open on friction stays: the hinged metal arms at the top and bottom of the sash that hold it in place at whatever angle you leave it. When a stay wears out, the window swings shut in the breeze, sags in the frame or will not close properly. We repair friction stays where we can and replace them where they are past saving.

Doors that drag

Aluminium sliding doors roll on small wheels in the bottom of the door. Once those wheels wear, the door grinds along the track and starts to wear that too. New sliding door wheels are one of the simplest fixes there is, and one of the most satisfying.

Folding doors that fight back

Folding doors have more moving parts than most: hinges between every panel, running gear at the top or bottom and several locking points. When any of those go, the doors stop folding smoothly and start needing a firm push. We repair folding doors so the panels move together again.

Handles, hinges and seals

Handles take the strain of every opening and closing, so over time they can work loose or break. Hinges on hinged windows and doors can sag or seize, which stops the sash from closing square. Seals around the glass and frame perish in the sun, letting in draughts, dust and rain. We repair and replace handles, replace hinges and fit new seals.

Signs it is time to call

• A window swings shut on its own, or will not stay open.
• A sliding door grinds, sticks or needs two hands to move.
• You can feel a draught or see daylight around a closed window or door.
• A handle is loose, stiff or turns without doing anything.
• A folding door has to be lifted or forced to close.

None of these fix themselves, and most get worse with use.
